The Reddit AI myth might be one of the biggest misunderstandings in AI search and GEO right now.
Over the summer of 2026, one stat seemed to appear everywhere: "Reddit accounts for 40% of AI citations." Suddenly, every brand was asking the same question: what are we doing on Reddit?
There's a problem with that. Showing up in lots of AI answers is not the same as making up lots of what AI actually cites. PrettyGreen's Ai Fame Tracker™ has recorded more than 1.7 million citations across 120 brands, and our data shows the difference really clearly.
Does Reddit really dominate AI citations?
Not in our data. Reddit appears somewhere in 20.73% of AI answers that cite external sources, which means roughly 1 in 5 answers contains a Reddit link. That sounds huge, and it's easy to see how the myth took hold.
But when you count every individual link AI cites, only 3.8% come from Reddit. That's about 1 in 26.
Think of an AI answer that draws on six sources: a brand website, a newspaper, a review site, YouTube, Reddit and a trade publication. Reddit showed up, but it was one of six, and the other five were doing just as much of the talking. Appearing in an answer isn't the same as driving it.
Is Reddit's share of AI citations growing?
Quite the opposite. In July 2026, Reddit made up 4.41% of all the citations we tracked. In August that fell to 2.76%. Even that relatively small share is shrinking fast.
Which AI actually cites Reddit?
This is where it gets more interesting. Nearly 95% of the Reddit citations we've recorded come from a single engine: Perplexity. Across OpenAI's search models, Reddit accounts for just 3.2% of citations, and for Google Gemini it's only 2.2%.
So the next time someone tells you "AI loves Reddit", ask them one simple question: which AI? ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity don't behave in the same way, and neither do different product categories.
What about YouTube?
The same logic applies. Across our whole dataset, YouTube appears in 14.62% of cited answers and makes up around 4.1% of individual citations. But in some consumer categories, including TV/Streaming, Home and Retail, we've seen it appear in 55% to 79% of cited answers.
There is no universal list of sources that AI likes. It changes by model, by category and by the question someone asks. And, as the Reddit numbers show, it changes by month too.
Why chasing Reddit is a risky strategy
There's one more problem with building a GEO plan around Reddit: a lot of what AI cites is old. Of the 27,800+ dated Reddit citations we've analysed, only 13% were published in 2026. Nearly half (48.4%) came from 2024 or earlier, and a quarter came from 2023 or earlier. We've even seen Perplexity cite Reddit threads from 2010 and 2011 when answering current consumer questions.
Manufacturing Reddit conversations in 2026 in the hope of influencing AI feels like a pretty fragile strategy.
So, does Reddit matter?
Of course it does. Reddit is full of genuine conversations about what people buy, recommend, dislike and trust, and that's valuable whether or not AI is reading it. But Reddit isn't a GEO strategy on its own. Neither is YouTube.
What should brands do instead?
The bigger opportunity is understanding what evidence AI needs to choose your brand, where it finds that evidence, and what's missing when it doesn't recommend you. That might be your website, editorial coverage, customer reviews, YouTube and, yes, sometimes Reddit.
Don't chase where AI looked yesterday. Instead, get to know your brand, product, audience and the occasions people buy for, then build your channel plan around them.
Reddit is often in the room. It's rarely doing most of the talking. So why build your GEO strategy around it?
FAQ's
Does Reddit account for 40% of AI citations?
Not in our data. Across more than 1.7 million citations from 120 brands, Reddit makes up 3.8% of all individual citations. It appears in 20.73% of AI answers that cite sources, about 1 in 5, but it's usually one of several sources in the answer rather than the main one.
Which AI engine cites Reddit the most?
Perplexity. Nearly 95% of the Reddit citations we've recorded come from that one engine. Reddit makes up 3.2% of citations across OpenAI's search models and 2.2% for Google Gemini.
Should my brand post on Reddit to show up in AI answers?
Reddit can be a useful place to take part in real conversations, but it isn't a GEO strategy on its own. Its share of AI citations is falling, much of the Reddit content AI cites is old, and the sources AI uses change by engine, category and question. A better starting point is understanding what evidence AI needs to recommend your brand and where it finds it.
What sources does AI cite most often?
There's no universal list. It changes by AI engine, by product category, by the question someone asks and by month. For example, YouTube appears in 14.62% of cited answers across our whole dataset, but in 55% to 79% of cited answers in categories like TV/Streaming, Home and Retail.
What is GEO?
GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the practice of making sure your brand is found and recommended in answers from AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
