The Year of the Home Cook at OnBlackheath Festival with John Lewis

2017 has seen the meteoric rise of ‘the foodie’ and growing popularity of cooking shows such as Top Chef, Masterchef and The Great British Bake off. However, despite this growing interest, a lot of TV programmes don’t translate to home cooking – recipes are too challenging, take too long or have expensive and hard-to-find products. This doesn’t stop people wanting to experience these exciting dishes, but it does put them off giving it a go themselves.

So, how to tackle those who want to experience exciting and tantalising new recipes but also want to be able to whip up a culinary masterpiece at home? Invite them to a John Lewis Cookery School…

In its fourth year at the OnBlackheath Festival, PrettyGreen were very pleased to be involved once again running the Cookery School as part of the festival activity with John Lewis. Two Masterchef finalists Juanita Hennessey and Saira Hamilton (Ham and Hen) were invited to show cooking isn’t as intimidating as it looks on TV (it does help not having Greg Wallace staring at you while you chop…).

During one-hour sessions, John Lewis along with Ham and Hen invited 12 guests to take part in a cookery lesson. Equipped with aprons and top-of-the-range kitchen equipment supplied from John Lewis, AEG and Joseph and Joseph, the guests were kept busy measuring, pouring, stirring, blitzing, frying and even sous-vidding – to create their very own dish to take away with them to enjoy. The first dish on the menu on Saturday was a sous-vide venison steak and ‘Mexican’ salsa with peanut sauce and street market salad from Juanita – YUM. Sundays recipe saw the delights of a chicken makhani with Aloo Gobi from Saira’s Bangladeshi heritage.

Home cooking shouldn’t be a chore but an ability to create an experience. People want to save money, know what’s in their food and where it comes from. As a result, and thanks to our lovely chefs, it seems home cooking is on the up! Bringing the fun back into the domestic kitchen for our foodie guests, expect to smell some rather yummy aromas coming from the homes around Blackheath!
