Swing Low, Sweet 16
On Saturday, a select few PrettyGreeners headed west to the Millennium Stadium in Wales to witness Cymru cuff Argentina from the luxury of the Under Armour box. Whilst there were some dynamic moves, as a friendly, it won’t be remembered as a classic match but certainly easier than expected against a side of steak-eating units who finished 3rd at 2007’s tournament. The whole of Wales agreed, it was a great time to come good.
Whilst Andy Powell exorcised his golf-cart demons by finishing an impressive move and 19 year-old man-mountain George North scored yet another try, both to stake their claims for a seat on the flight to Wellington, the fans were transfixed as they heard the first member of Wales’ World Cup squad be announced at half-time… and it was a surprise.
To the cheer of 50,000 fans, 16 year-old Alex Mackenzie-Grist, a proud Welshman who had just finished his GCSEs impressed the ‘selectors’ so much that he was to don the famous red jersey in September – by being chosen as the winner of Under Armour’s 16th Man competition. Alex would fly out with the team, train with the squad and experience the pre-match buzz from the locker room before being given the best seats in the house. Alex accepted his prize from Toby Faletau, along with a signed shirt, tickets to the match and a chat with star-player Jamie Roberts, all by purchasing an Under Armour replica shirt and declaring his passion for Welsh Rugby. Not bad for a days work.
As we drove back to London, it did give us a glimmer of hope and we couldn’t help but think there may still be one more chance for the 2015 tournament… could there?
Training starts (and most probably ends) tomorrow.
