It was a cold dark winter day when John Lewis phoned and told us they had a top secret plan to build an amazing roof garden on top of their Oxford Street store. At the time, it was very difficult to imagine but the opening day is upon us, and the garden is a triumph.
To celebrate John Lewis marking its 150th Year, PrettyGreen has been working tirelessly to create and build the John Lewis 150 Years Rooftop Garden on top of the roof of their Oxford Street store – a bloody lovely bespoke green space away from the urban chaos below.
We believe we are capable of anything, but an encyclopaedic knowledge of plant life was a bit of a stretch for even the greenest PrettyGreener, hence us getting in touch with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Young Garden Designer of the Year 2013 – Tony Woods, to bring his flair to the plans. The results have made us very proud and appreciative of the opportunity to work on such a great project.
It opens to the public during the stores opening hours and will also play host to a series of exciting events produced by PrettyGreen and John Lewis’ partner brands across the fifteen-week live period.
Realistically there isn’t enough space on the entire internet to document all of the moments of hilarity that could be relevant on this project over the last few months, but here are a few….
– Men with a New Zealand accent repeating the word ‘DECK’ (it sounds like dick LOL)
– Jokes about hard helmets
– Serious, hour long conversations about the merits of bandstands
– Trying to have respect for your colleagues whilst wearing high-vis jackets and oversized hats
– Watching Lucy Cole eat in the staff canteen on her own like the unpopular kid at school
– Builder selfies:
