Like. Poke. Friend. Facebook Turns 10!
Ten years ago it didn’t exist. If you wanted to find out what your next door neighbour’s best friend’s Uncle did for his birthday, you’d have to have a weird conversation over the fence. Thank god then for the wonder that is Facebook, today it celebrates a decade!
Like most people, the majority of PrettyGreeners have an account (although some don’t accept friend requests from people they work with… we won’t mention any names but we’d love to know what they’re keeping secret!).
As we all know (from watching David Fincher’s 2010 film, The Social Network) it was founded by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg and his college room mates in 2004. What you might not know is that the site now has over 1.23 billion users. Prior to Facebook, Zuckerberg had already had success with building social media sites for his fellow students including Facemash, a website that asked users to judge students by how attractive they were. There’s nothing like a bit of superficiality to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Not just for stalking people, selfies and over the top status posts, Facebook has already had a lasting effect on the English vocabulary, coining terms such as ‘poke, unfriend, Facebook official and like’, it’s also changed how we do business and interact socially.
We’d like to wish a big fat Happy Birthday to this wonderful platform and in tribute have decided to share our first ever Facebook profile pictures… Facemash worthy, they aint!
Mark Zuckerberg. We salute you. Lend us a tenner?
